You can have the damper closed if you have the Chimney Balloon in there far enough to close it. There is a few things to keep in mind though if you do decide to close the damper. If you try to force the damper closed it may put upward pressure on the valve section of your Chimney Balloon. That is a little tough on your Chimney Balloon sence it puts undue pressure on the valve and balloon. The other issue is if you close your damper you may forget you installed the Chimney Balloon and just open the damper and start a fire.
I leave my damper open and leave the inflation tube attached so it dangles just above my head when I open the glass doorsto the fireplace. With this solution I still have no draft problem and I havent accidentally melted a Chimney Balloon yet.

Who can come out to get the size needed for the installation of the chimney balloon? Do they install.

If you prefer not to do the sizing and install of a Chimney Balloon yourself, you can have your local chimney sweep do it. It is good to have a chimney cleaned every so often anyway to remove dangerous creosote buildup. When the chimney sweep comes over to clean your chimney you can show him or her the sizing page on this website (or you can email them about it in advanced) and they can certainly size a Chimney Balloon up for you according to the directions. It is a very simple measurement, so it should not cost any extra in labor. Installation of a Chimney Balloon is even easier than measuring for one, but you could call any chimney sweep to install it as well. That will likely cost you another house call though. ---------- Jasonr Moderator

Following the instructions on this site our placement for a chimney ballon would be roughly 4 feet above the metal damper in a space that is roughly 12x12. I am planning to purchase a 15x15 ballon, but is there an HEX extension long enough for placement and inflation of the ballon?

Rich, It sounds like you are trying to size a Chimney Balloon in your first chimney tile area. I think you will find it much easier to measure and install a Chimney Balloon in a lower location. What you are looking for in your flue is an area about 7" or 8" in height that has roughly parallel walls on at least 2 opposing sides, and is out of the way of the damper hardware. Knowing that description, is there an area just above or below your damper that may be a better location to measure? ---------- Jasonr Moderator

From just above the screen closure on the fireplace, the 4 walls all slant inward from 29x15 to 10x9 at the damper which is 27" up the chimney. Do you think a balloon approximately 10X10 would work just below the damper?

Hi Kathy, It sounds like the location just above the damper would be the best place since from your description the walls are still slanting inward up until the damper. I would go with a 12x12 with an HEK extender if your installation point is 27" up and 10"x9" in size. Actually when you order send an email that you would like an extra long HEK extender. We have inventory of an extra long 20" HEK extenders, but we have not entered it onto the website yet as a stock item as of 12/15/08. However, we can ship the extra long HEK if they are requested, and in this case... I would recommend it. ---------- Jasonr Moderator

What about the slits just below the damper? Would these hold the chimney balloon in? The slits are inward however and not where the balloon could hang onto them. I wonder if I can reach up inside to get the chimney balloon above the damper even with a 20" extender? Even with a flashlight it is really dark up that far. When the damper is open it it open only half way so I will not have much room to squeeze the balloon above it.

Can I call 608-467-0229 to order? How is it out in that cold anyway? I used to live in LaCrosse, WI which is not far from Janesville. But I left that cold for Arkansas.

There are some irregularities to this application Kathy, and I want to make sure I advise you correctly. Please call the 608-467-0229 Chimney Balloon hotline and we can discuss the options for your fireplace. ---------- Jasonr Moderator
