Using Balloon at top of Chase

I have a set of non-vented gas logs which when not in use lets a horrible downflow of cold air in from outside. I saw an old thread that said the balloon will deflate when installed near the damper.

My question is can I close off the top of the chase up on the roof with one of the Chimney Balloons? And would the temperature at that height be cool enough where we could fire the gas logs and still keep the balloon in tact?

Thanks, Dennis

Hi Dennis,
You pose a very good question. We have had many customers install a Chimney Balloon upside down from the top of the chimney when they have installed an electric fireplace insert but have not had anyone try it with a vent free gas log.

My initial reaction is with the vent free gas log burning I am certain that the temperature at the top of the chimney will get to the 200 degrees Fahrenheit and trigger the Chimney Balloon to release within 15 minutes. The reason for my certainty is that the damper you have is inevitably going to leak heat or convect heat into the chimney and that heat will naturally rise and collect against the Chimney Balloon.

My suggestion is to use the Chimney Balloon conventionally and just install it while the fireplace is not being used. Any amount of time you have the Chimney Balloon installed will be saving you money.

There is one other thing you should be aware of with your vent free gas log. There was a University of IL 3 year study that was done on ventless gas units in homes in Illinois. Here is a link to a blog article about the study and a link to the study results: http://www.chimneyballoonusa.com/blog/2009/08/3-year-univ-of-il-study-results-answer-how-safe-are-ventless-gas-logs.html

Personally, I found this research to be eye opening and something that ventless gas log users should be aware of. I will let you draw your own conclusion from it, but pay particular attention to the NO2 level results in the study.

Hi!

I have a property built around 1900. It is a three storey building with a three storey shed behind it. The chimney is located at the back wall of the building. All of the sheds are not insulated but roughly 50% are. The previous owner got some pipes installed in the chimney to provide water for washer outlets in the sheds. Needless to say the pipes froze! Anyways...I wanted to know can I install a chimney balloon on the top of the chimney to stop any drafts from coming in? Is it as effective as fiberglass? If it gets up to freezing temperatures is the balloon still going to stay in place? It will not change shape or wither up at -30 degrees (celcius)? Thanks!

ps. the space is quite small about 1.25 feet by 1.25 feet or perhaps even smaller.

Ahhh, running pipes through an open chimney. That previous owner really set you up for a fall on that one. Since this is essentially an abandon chimney you can install a Chimney Balloon at the top and it will help significantly. From your measurements it sounds like it would take a 15x15.

The balloon will not shrivel in the cold, but it will soften slightly. To minimize this I do recommend inflating it when the temp outside is cool (like late fall or winter) and you should inflate it with a pump not by mouth. That way you will inflate it with cold air when the ambient air is cold as well.

I would advise checking it once a year in the fall just to top it off with air and make sure it didnt shift. Also make sure you install it at arms length into the top of the flue so the suns UV doesnt reach it.

The Chimney balloon will plug the chimney better than a fiberglass plug since the balloon will insulate and air seal at the same time. Fiberglass is a great insulator, but it is not an air sealer, so if there are air currents (like in a drafty chimney) it will let cold right through. That is exactly why people call us all the time and say "I plugged my flue with fiberglass but it is still drafty...what is the deal?"

It was an instant hit and inspired other clubs to release their respective nfl replica jerseys. For those that are overlooking the cheap Carolina Panthers jerseys, they might want to look in the rearview mirror.Regardless of color, the most prominent feature of cheap Chicago Bears jerseysis the rounded numbers.
